Are your team coaches background checked?

All of our coaches are background checked using the cirteria used by the City of Tampa.

What does the registration fee cover?

All of the team’s sanctioned insurance fees, the coach’s background checks, and some additional team costs.

How many times a week do the competitive teams practice?

Most of our teams practice 2 times a week.

Do you host tournaments at the home field?

Yes, we do host tournaments at the New Tampa and Greco complexes.

Are your team coaches background checked?

Yes all are safety certified and City of Tampa background checked.

What sanctioned tournaments do the teams play in?

We compete in all sanctioned tournaments including ASA, USSSA, ISA, NSA

How do I pay my childÔÇÖs outstanding balance?

Payments may be made via your CAN-DO account on line or by check/money order mailed to CAN-DO 13621 N. Florida Ave., Tpa, Fl 33613.    

If competitive level is too much for my child, are there recreational classes offered by CAN-DO?

CAN-DO does not offer recreational classes. However, recreational classes are available from the City of Tampa. Please see www.tampagov.net for more information.    

How do I enroll my child in classes?

Due to the competitive nature of CAN-DO classes, athletes must try-out and meet qualifications. More information can be found on each sports individual pages or by using the Contact Us page form.    

For what ages does CAN-DO offer classes?

CAN-DO offers competitive classes for ages 5 -18, depending on the sport.

Are CAN-DO classes affordable?

Thanks to the co-operative agreement with the City of Tampa, CAN-DOÔÇÖs competitive classes are offered at very affordable prices.

How does CAN-DO work with the City of Tampa?

CAN-DO and the City of Tampa work together under a co-operative agreement in an effort to bring competive sports at an affordable price to the community while still maintaining a high quality program.

What does CAN-DO stand for?

CAN-DO stands for ChildrenÔÇÖs Athletic Network and Dance Opportunities.

Does the club host meets?

Yes we host the annual C. Gene Stowe Scholarship Invitational as well as AAU qualifiers and AAU state and National Competitions.

Is there a booster club?

Yes, membership is mandatory.

Are the athletes expected to participate in all competitions?

The competitions that are chosen for each athlete are chosen for that athlete so yes we expect the athlete to participate in the meets selected for them.

 

What is the policy for missing workouts?

Frequently missing workouts will hinder performance and improvements.

Do the coaches receive continued training?

Yes coaches attend USA gymnastics Regional and National Congress as well as in house training.

What kind of coaching experience do your coaches have??

The majority of our coaches have been at Tampa Gymnastics for over ÔÇÄ10 years with the head coach being at TGD for over 20 years. Our newer coaches, many of whom participated in our program as a young athlete, are trained by our verteran coaches.

What is the highest level that your club coaches?

Level 10

Are your team coaches USAG certified?

Yes all are safety, professional, and Junior Olympic certified as well as City of Tampa Background checked as well as USA background checked

Does the club compete USAG and AAU meets?

Yes, our club competes in USAG and AAU meets.

Can I use the choreography I learn in class for other events or performances?

You may not perform under the Tampa Gymnastics and Dance Showstar Performance Team name or use the choreography of any of its members without first clearing the performance with the teacher, choreographer, and the program director. 

Can I still practice if I am injured?

We take injuries very seriously. If you get hurt in or outside of class, you may be asked to sit out of practice until you present the teacher with a doctorÔÇÖs note clearing you to resume dance activities.

Can I sit down during practice?

No one sits down during a class or rehearsal unless we are taking a break, or you are specifically asked to sit and watch a group perform. There is always something you can be working on.

What type of behavior is expected during classes?

Being disrespectful to a coach or fellow dancer. We expect respectful attitudes out of all of our dancers. All students must display excellent behavior and listening skills in class, and are expected to be positive role models for their non-competitive peers. Dancers must be able to accept positive criticism and constant corrections from instructors with a positive attitude.

Can I bring any electronics to practice?

All electronics must either be turned off or set to ÔÇ£silent modeÔÇØ during class or rehearsals.

What events am I responsible for attending?

You are responsible for participating in all team events, such as fundraisers, special events, performances, etc. unless, otherwise instructed.

Can I talk during practice?

Practices should be silent, with the exception of the person teaching the routines. Anyone who consistently talks during instruction will be given a warning. If the talking continues he/she may be placed on probation or dismissed from that practice, class, or routine.

What happens if I miss a practice?

If you miss a class or practice, you must make up the material you missed BEFORE the next practice. It is your responsibility to make up missed work. You must notify a teacher prior to practices if you will be absent. Having another team member ÔÇ£pass on the messageÔÇØ is not acceptable.

What should I wear to my showstar class?

Black Showstar Leotards and Pink tights. Hair should be pulled back out of face ÔÇô Buns or ponytails, no bangs. Appropriate dance shoes for the style of class you are attending. Please wear cover ups when entering and exiting dance rooms and facility. No dangling jewelry should be worn to class.

What is the policy about playing time?

Playing time is determined by each coach. Team Tampa Basketball encourages that each player receive roughly equal playing time during the regular season of league games. This may vary due to a number of factors including attendance at practices, positional needs, competition, fouls, injuries and other factors. Players may play more in some games and less in others. During the playoffs of league games and the tournament season, coaches may "play to win," but all players are expected to meaningfully participate.

Do I need to live in the city of Tampa to play on a travel team?

No, players on the travel team can be from anywhere in the Tampa Bay area.

What happens if I donÔÇÖt make a travel team?

If you donÔÇÖt make a travel team, you will automatically be enrolled in our league program.

How are the travel teams determined?

Travel Teams have tryouts approximately 4 weeks before the season starts for grades 4-8 while the high school divisions have tryouts after the high school basketball season is over.   

Are there any extra fees for travel?

There is additional cost of a travel uniform package which is approximately $150.00.

Are scholarships available?

Full and partial scholarships are available. Families needing scholarship help should speak to the coach or send an email to the Team Tampa director.  

How much does it cost?

Each player must have a recreation card from the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation department. For players living in the city limits the annual fee is $15. If a player lives outside the city limit of Tampa the annual fee is $30. The monthly gym fee is $35.

How often do teams practice?

Practice is usually twice a week in season for about 75 minutes each session.

How many games are played?

League games are eight per season plus payoffs. Playing one game per week. Travel teams play at least three games per event.

Where are the games played?

League games are played in one of the seven city of Tampa gyms and travel team game vary depending where the event is hosted. Please visit our list of frequented venues for these locations.

How far do teams travel?

Most teams travel time is usually no more than 2 hours. There are occasions where teams travel further based on placement of ability.  

When does the travel basketball season start?

The travel basketball season has different starting times depending on age and gender: Grades 2nd ÔÇô 8th starts in December, Grades 9th ÔÇô 12th start in late February.

How many players are on each team?

 We try to keep our rosters between 10 and 12 players per team.

Do we offer travel basketball?

Yes.

When does league play occur?

Winter league runs from December through February; Summer league runs July through August.

Do we offer league play?

Yes, we host our competitive youth leagues in the winter and summer.

Do we offer programming for boys and girls?

Yes, we offer playing opportunities for both boys and girls.

What ages do we accept?

We accept players ages 5 to 18.
